If I have solar, what happens when the power goes out?

Solar arrays do not rely on the grid which means that they technically can produce energy even during blackouts.  However, most grid-tied systems are required to protect utility linemen and women by implementing a built in safety protocol to prevent energy leaking power to the grid lines.  This means that during a blackout, solar arrays must automatically shut down.  

Secure Power Supplies (SPS) can be built or retrofitted into a solar PV array.  Depending on the brand, they can provide around 1,500 to 2,000 watts of electricity even when the grid goes down!  Here is a lighthearted SMA video that explains what you can power with just 1,500 watts.  Secure Power Supplies don’t cost that much to install and they are well worth the security and peace of mind they provide, so most people do opt for them.

Alternatively, more and more people are incorporating battery backup (AKA “Battery Storage” or “Energy Storage”) into their systems. 

The bonus benefit to battery backup is that if you are creating more energy than you use during the day, you can store it for use at night when your solar panels are not creating energy and when you’d otherwise use electricity from the grid.
